One week ago on September 27th, the community of Lillooet was impacted by a washout type slide causing rocks to slide and the land to shift at the “10-mile Slide” along Highway 99. This isn’t the first time this section of highway has been shut down from mud or rock slides. The dangerous section of highway has in fact been a long time concern for the community and safety.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) who is responsible for the conditions of public roads and highways, have brought in experts to assess the situation. First reports said that the movement rate of the slide has increased from millimeters per day to a 48-hour total of approximately six to eight inches over the first few days. Followed by more movement overnight this past Monday, of eight to 10 inches on the outside shoulder of the highway.
As of today, October 4, 2016 – 11:00 pm there has been no new updates as to how long the highway will be closed or what the current level of progress is.
The closed highway which acts as a lifeline for the Xaxli’p First Nation and neighbouring communities to access to work, schools, hospitals and even food. The situation has forced the Xaxli’p Chief Darrell Bob to declare a state of emergency.
In a statement to local news outlet Lillooet News Chief Darrell Bob said “Xaxli’p supports the closure, and during this time of emergency, we will be working closely with MOTI and the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District to make sure public safety comes first. Everyone’s involvement is crucial to restoring the highway to full operation because it is an important artery. If the road goes, it will have immeasurable and irreversible impacts on our entire region.”
