In episode one of Tribal Police Files, we are introduced first to Sergeant Dale Austinson and Constable Leonard Isaac of the Stl’atl’imx Tribal Police Service.
A vehicle incident called in for possibly hitting a deer turns into a case of impaired driving. Although none of the passengers in the vehicle are talking about who was driving the vehicle, Sergeant Dale Austinson and Constable Leonard Isaac gather evidence on scene to prove otherwise.
Chief Officer of the Stl’atl’imx Tribal Police Service, Deborah Doss-Cody is one of the few Indigenous female Chiefs of Police in the country. Chief Officer Doss-Cody and Constable Leonard Isaac take part in a traditional powwow, celebrating the New Year with their community. Constable Leonard Isaac shares his personal recognition with the community’s issues. Having grown up on a reserve, witnessing some of the same problems that the people he serves as an officer today deal with, he is able to understand the people and relate better.
Episode one also touches on the subject of the families behind the officer. Stacey Austinson, wife of Sergeant Dale Austinson shares her experience and fears that stem from being a police officer’s spouse.
Lastly, in the first episode of Tribal Police Files, things get intense with Chief Officer Deborah Doss-Cody as she takes us back to the time she stared down the barrel of a gun. How split decisions made that day impact the officers of Stl’atl’imx Tribal Police Services today.
“Every STP officer walks what is called a thin blue line. It’s a double-edged sword. You’re working in your own community, dealing with your own people and seeing things that nobody else has to see. Nobody else has to deal with. Seeing the rawest of the raw. Seeing the violence, the abuse. Whether it’s alcoholism or drugs, seeing the addictions. Being a First Nations police officer, that line is so fine. It’s tough to walk and it takes someone pretty strong and dedicated to walk that line.” – Chief Officer Deborah Doss-Cody
